Kwi - Calabash Gourds

Kwi are dishes made from half of a calabash gourd. They are used to in spiritual work and to serve food offerings to many of the Lwa of Vodou.

Kwi come in three sizes.

The small kwi are approximately 2-3 inches across. They are used mainly in treatments, for the client to drink from. Some child spirits like the Marassa and Ti Mazaka will take offerings in such a small dish.

Medium Kwi are used for many Rada Lwa for single dish food offerings - especially puddings, oatmeal and sweets.

Large Kwi are used for large dishes like whole chicken or beans and rice.

Small gourd rattle used to call or salute Djouba, Petwo, Kongo and Ghede Lwa.

Moushwa

These moushwa are the high quality satin scarves worn by both Spirit and Serviteurs alike. There are two sizes.

The smaller size scarf is meant to be worn on the head while attending ceremonies or doing work for a particular Lwa. It can also be used in work as a pwen or point of power. You can set it on the floor for the Spirit and place offerings or a lamp on top of it.

The larger scarf is one yard by one yard square. This is the type given the the Spirit for their altar or when they actually come in possession. Many Lwa tie a moushwa around various parts of the body - so a large size is needed to accommodate different body types.

All of the moushwa are real satin - not the poly, synthetic rayon material that has become so popular these days. The hems are hand sewn by Vodouisiant in Haiti.

Shodje

These are high quality aluminum pots sitting on three legs. They are used to light small fires and burn incense. They are a very important part or Vodou magical work as most items need to be "heated up".

Tin Plates

These are tin plates used to make illumination rituals and also to serve food offerings to some Petwo Lwa.

Both types of plates are the same size - approximately 7.5 inches in diameter.

One is enameled with a navy blue rim. This is the type used to make lamps for illumination.

The second type is an all silver plate which is the type Ezili Dantor eats her food on.
