About "The Mistic"

New Orleans Mistic began as a catalogue-based mail order company in 1990. In 1996, I moved the company exclusively to the web, and operated in cyberspace until May of 2001. Thereafter, the Mistic developed a physical presence in the form of a storefront at 2267 St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans' eight ward. We flourished there until that fateful day - August 29, 2005 - when Hurricane Katrina came crashing down on the city. Afterwards, I operated the storefront sporadically - trying to hold it together for over 7 months in a building that suffered severe structural damage and had no telephone or electric service. In May of 2006, I finally gave in and moved the shop to a warehouse in Algiers, Louisiana. We resumed operations as an online storefront July 1, 2006.

The Mistic is built around the concept of an old time occult shop. We are a botanica, religious supply, new-age store and alchemal formulary all wrapped up in one location. We are not a tourist trap or attraction. We strive to offer a variety of products at reasonable prices - from our shoppers most basic spiritual needs to rare, one of a kind esoteric items.

The Mistic is simply a supplier of products and services for the spiritually minded. It is not a church, temple, society or coven. We are nonjudgmental and nonsectarian. We strive to offer product information, suggestions and advice in a way that is sensitive to each individual's specific tradition.

"Mistic" is a purposeful misspelling of the word M-Y-S-T-I-C . We have chosen to use it in this form as it was commonly seen in WPA era advertising for spiritual products and services.

Our name, logo and storefront signage were designed to pay homage to the early purveyors of Spiritual Products. New Orleans has a long history associated with sellers of Hoodoo and Voodoo products. Our former storefront was located just a few miles from the world renown Hoodoo Drugstores of the 1930's: CrackerJack Drugstore, Ideal Drugstore, Dixie Drugstore and John Hall's Novelty Shop. Our Products

New Orleans Mistic stocks a wide variety of goods - from hand crafted oils, perfumes, incense and soaps to popular manufactured botanica fare.

We have over 300+ dried plants: herbs, flowers, roots, bark and woods imported from all over the world. Most of our plant materials are organic and wildcrafted.

We carry a nice selection of articles necessary for the practice of the Lucumi, Palo, Wicca & Vodou religions in addition to New age jewelry, books and gift items.
